Knowing that innovation is crucial for organisation, basically two ways exist to deliver innovation to an organisation. Often organisations use projects to start innovation. Projects are limited in time and they deliver specific innovative results to the organisation (e.g. a new product line, improved business processes or a new delivery channel). The other way to stimulate innovation in your organisation is to enhance the organisational innovation capabilities. This organisational learning process is structurally fed by introducing the necessary knowledge, organisational mechanisms and culture necessary to develop and sustain innovation in the organisation. Amsterdam AtVenture Associates uses both ways in its services to deliver innovation to organisations.

Holistic approach & levels of innovation

Experience shows that projects focusing on innovation are risky due to their nature and due to the way they are being managed. Often the focus is one-sided e.g. on technology or on marketing and other relevant aspects from an internal and an external perspective are forgotten in the heat of the moment. To minimise those risks we approach innovation projects and capability building both from an holistic approach, integrating all relevant internal and external aspects and therefore minimising risks.

Levels of innovation

Innovation is a widely used word that is being used for all kind of initiatives in organisational transformation. Most initiatives can be positioned on a continuum from minor improvements to radical innovation:

	Efficiency (e.g. cost reduction, shortening cycle times)
	Effectiveness (e.g. quality improvement, better products/services)
	Doing things differently (e.g. new processes)
	Doing different things (e.g. new products)
	Improving intangible assets (e.g. image, market leadership)

Clearly these different innovation levels require differences in approach, focusing differently on the internal/external perspective as addressed in the holistic approach.
