Innovation is key |
Nature has its own cycle of innovation and renewal in which
the selection of the fittest takes place. In spring new life develops and
rapid growth appears comparable to new initiatives and innovation in
organizations. Like new born lambs innovation initiatives are as well full of
life as vulnerable and need support from mature businesses like conglomerates
and/or venture capital. |
For organizations innovation is a key mechanism to develop new capabilities for competing in the market place. Lack of innovation for organizations means transition towards the autumn and winter of their lifecycle. Over time they will be overtaken by competitors or new entrants in the market. These organizations in the spring of their lifecycle will conquer markets with their innovation capability and efficient way of working. |
In summer nature matures and bares fruit. With the sun, rain
and nourishment available during this rich season growth of the new life
develops to strong mature individuals that can survive and reproduce.
Organizationally mature businesses develop from innovation initiatives that
are profitable and generate enough cash to support new innovation initiatives
in the next cycle. |
One of the major drivers transforming organizations these days is innovation based on Information & Communication Technology (ICT). Both external influences (like the introduction of virtual supply chains and virtual communities) and internal influences (e.g. the drive for efficiency) drive organizations to innovate by introducing ICT for renewing the product portfolio, improving efficiency and/or introducing new sales/purchasing channels. |
Autumn in nature is the period in which life consolidates the
growth and prepares for bad weather and limited resources in winter. Organizations
will need to adapt to declining economic climate and protect their business
from the limited resources available and/or make them self supporting. |
Such changes are generally high impact and wide reaching. While innovating the organization is learning about new cooperation models between or within organizations, about technology, about market response and about the contribution of these learning experiences to the overall business strategy. All these issues need to be managed coherently to reach a new balanced situation with innovated capabilities. |
In winter nature goes back to the roots to find shelter
against the harsh conditions and survive until the next cycle starts again.
Weaker organizations will perish during the economic winter. Deciding which
of their businesses will get priority during the distribution of the scarce
resources and going back to their roots is the task for organizations in
winter. Nature and organizations are similar in their circle of life. In our
advise we take this into account. |
